Caren Merrick

Caren Merrick is a technology entrepreneur, executive, investor and board director with over 25 years experience in growth companies. She was founder and CEO of Pocket Mentor, a mobile app delivering leadership development tools. She co-founded and served as Executive Vice President of webMethods, Inc. growing it from zero to $200m in revenue with 1,100 employees. She has deep experience in the nonprofit sector as co-founder, President and Chairman of the webMethods Foundation, which made dozens of grants to educational nonprofits that empower underserved communities. She has served on corporate boards with combined assets of $12b and revenue of $3B including boards of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Washington First Bankshares, and currently serves on the boards of the Gladstone Companies funds where she serves as Chairman of the Valuations Committee and is a member of the Audit Committee. She is a venture partner with NextGen Venture Partners, and served on the Virginia Governor’s Economic Development and Jobs Creation Commission, and served as a member of the Working Group on the Virginia Institute for Marine Science Innovation Fund. She is a member of the board of directors of Capital Partners for Education. She has served on the boards of the International Womens Forum DC chapter, and The Langley School. She holds a BA in political science from the University of California Los Angeles and attended Santa Monica Community College. She writes and speaks about leadership and growth and has been featured in national and international media.
